Transesophageal Echocardiography (TEE)

Transesophageal echocardiography, also called TEE or “swallow echo,” provides a highly detailed view of the heart valves and atria, even detecting small blood clots. It is used when precise examination of structures or details is required.

Procedure

The TEE is performed using an endoscope-like device inserted through the esophagus. Since the esophagus is close to the heart, no interfering tissues (skin, ribs, muscles, or lung air) obstruct the view, unlike with standard echocardiography.

Applications

  • Detecting blood clots in the heart, especially in cases of arrhythmia or after a stroke
  • Diagnosing heart valve inflammation
  • Performing functional assessments of heart valves in real time using modern 3D TEE probes, aiding surgeons and cardiologists in treatment planning
The procedure is usually performed under mild sedation to ensure patient comfort.
