Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA): Precise body analysis for your health in Vienna at our Group-Practice

In our clinic, we use the high-end analysis device seca mBCA Ultra to accurately measure body composition. The so-called Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA) is a medically recognized method that gently shows exactly where fat, muscle, and water are located in the body – and how these proportions change over time.

The measurement is painless, takes only a few minutes, and is performed using electrodes on the hands and feet.

  • Important! This procedure must not be used on pregnant individuals or persons with a pacemaker.

Among other things, the following values are measured:

Body Fat Percentage (Body Fat %): Shows what percentage of the body consists of fat. Important for assessing overweight, risk factors, and for monitoring during diets.

Visceral Fat: Fat surrounding the internal organs – particularly relevant for increased risk of diabetes or cardiovascular disease.

Muscle Mass: Measured separately for arms, legs, and trunk. An increase may indicate improved training or metabolism.

Body Water: Divided into intracellular (inside the cells) and extracellular water (outside the cells). Imbalances may indicate inflammation or dehydration.

Fat-Free Mass (FFM): Everything in the body except fat – i.e., muscles, bones, organs, and water. Important for assessing nutritional status.

Phase Angle: A medical marker of cell health. A higher value indicates good cell function and a stable immune system.

Body Cell Mass (BCM): Shows the metabolically active cell mass – a direct indicator of nutritional status and muscle metabolism.

Why is this important?

Many of these parameters cannot be measured with a regular scale. For example, a stable body weight can be misleading: muscle mass may have increased while fat mass decreased – a highly positive result that is only visible through BIA measurement.

The analysis helps us to:

  • Target therapies more effectively, e.g., for weight problems, malnutrition, or chronic diseases,

  • Objectively track the progress of dietary changes or training programs,

  • Provide you with clear and understandable feedback on your progress.

The BIA assessment allows us to precisely monitor and evaluate your nutritional and therapy progress in detail. This way, we can see whether fat has been reduced or muscle mass has increased – regardless of total body weight. This boosts motivation, enables targeted adjustments, and ensures greater transparency in counseling.
