24-Hour Blood Pressure Monitoring in Vienna at our Group-Practice
Blood pressure can vary significantly within short periods and is influenced by emotional states. In medical practices, higher values are often measured due to the “white coat effect.”
A highly accurate evaluation is achieved with devices that measure blood pressure multiple times an hour over a period of 20–24 hours. A blood pressure cuff remains attached, and measurements are taken automatically. The device is provided to the patient for the duration of the test to take home. The results help determine if a condition requiring treatment is present.

Why are single measurements often insufficient?
Single blood pressure measurements can be inaccurate due to fluctuations caused by time of day, excitement, stress, or physical activity. They provide only a snapshot. Blood pressure can vary systolically by up to 60 mmHg and diastolically by 40 mmHg.
An exact diagnosis requires more comprehensive measurements, including nighttime values, which cannot be obtained in a practice or through self-monitoring.
Long-term Monitoring for Accurate Diagnoses
24-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring provides reliable data for a definitive diagnosis. Blood pressure is measured over approximately 24 hours while the patient continues their daily and nightly routines. This ensures the readings reflect the true blood pressure levels in everyday life, free from external influences.
The 24-Hour Measurement Process
The 24-hour blood pressure monitoring is non-invasive and entirely pain-free. A blood pressure cuff is fitted to the patient’s upper arm and connected to a small device that performs regular measurements during the day and night. Similar to standard blood pressure tests, the cuff causes a slight pressure sensation during measurements.
The device must be worn at all times and can be attached to a belt or worn as a strap. To ensure accurate results, patients should record physical activities and rest periods. Any symptoms, such as palpitations or headaches, should also be noted.
Evaluation of Results
The data is evaluated the following day and discussed with the patient. The calculated 24-hour average determines if arterial hypertension is present.
