Specialist Driver’s License Examination in Vienna at our Group-Practice

(“Driver’s License Certificate” or “Driver’s License Report”)

There are essentially two types of driver’s license assessments. On the one hand, there is the commonly known driver’s license examination, which assesses an individual’s health fitness to operate motor vehicles. This certificate is conducted by a public health physician in general medicine and must be completed by everyone before obtaining a driver’s license.

Additionally, there is a specialist driver’s license examination, which is only necessary if concerns regarding the individual’s health fitness arose during the initial examination. In such cases, a relevant specialist is consulted depending on the area of concern to provide an expert opinion. This opinion is submitted to the driver’s license authority and contributes to the decision about granting or renewing the license.

What are the reasons for a specialist opinion?

There are various reasons why the driver’s license authority might require a medical assessment from an individual. These reasons range from physical illnesses such as diabetes, high blood pressure, heart and vascular diseases, or neurological disorders to psychological conditions, as well as issues related to alcohol or drug use.

In the official letter from the authority, the individual will be informed about the specific reasons for the doubts regarding their fitness to drive. The letter also specifies the timeframe within which the specialist opinion must be provided. Please note that this assessment is a private service and is not covered by health insurance.

What is checked during the driver’s license examination by an internist?

For a specialist driver’s license examination by an internist, patients with conditions such as heart rhythm disorders, high blood pressure, or diabetes are assessed.

In accordance with § 3 FSG-GV, the following areas are reviewed during the examination:

  • Laboratory tests
  • 24-hour blood pressure monitoring
  • 24-hour ECG
  • Cardiac ultrasound
  • Vascular ultrasound
  • Stress ECG

These examinations conclude with either a supportive or negative opinion, which may also be time-limited. The expert opinion is forwarded to the responsible authority, which then decides on the individual’s fitness to drive.
