Abdominal Ultrasound (Abdominal Sonography) in Vienna at our Group-Practice

Abdominal sonography, also known as abdominal ultrasound, is one of the most effective methods for diagnosing the organs in the abdominal cavity. It is a non-invasive, safe, and painless procedure that delivers critical insights into the condition of the liver, gallbladder, pancreas, kidneys, spleen, and other abdominal structures.

What is Abdominal Ultrasound and How Does it Work?

Abdominal ultrasound employs sound waves to create detailed images of the internal organs in the abdominal area. A specialized ultrasound probe transmits these sound waves, which bounce back upon hitting various tissues. These echoes are then captured to form real-time images of organs, offering a clear understanding of their structure and functionality.

This procedure is frequently used in our practice to detect illnesses early and to monitor ongoing treatments. It is also completely harmless as it does not involve radiation.

Which Organs Can Be Examined?

Using abdominal ultrasound, we can thoroughly examine the following organs:

  • Liver: Detecting fatty liver, hepatitis, cirrhosis, cysts, and liver cancer.

  • Gallbladder: Identifying gallstones, inflammation, and cancer.

  • Pancreas: Detecting pancreatitis, cysts, and pancreatic cancer.

  • Kidneys: Assessing kidney stones, cysts, hydronephrosis, and kidney cancer.
  • Spleen: Detecting enlargement, cysts, or infarctions.

  • Blood Vessels: Examining for aneurysms or blockages. Additional vascular ultrasound examinations may be required.

Preparation for the Examination

To ensure clear imaging, patients should

  • Fast for at least four hours prior to the examination (no food or drinks other than water).

  • Wear comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the abdominal area.

  • Bring any prior medical reports, test results, and their insurance card.

  • Arrive at least 30 minutes before the scheduled appointment time.

Procedure of the Examination

During the examination, the patient lies on their back in a relaxed position. A special ultrasound gel is applied to the abdomen to improve sound wave transmission. The physician moves the ultrasound probe across the abdominal area to capture images, which are displayed on a monitor. The process is completely painless and typically takes about 15-30 minutes. After the examination, the gel is wiped off, and the patient can immediately resume normal activities.

What Conditions Can Be Diagnosed with Abdominal Ultrasound?

Abdominal ultrasound can help diagnose and monitor a range of conditions, including:

  • Inflammations: Gallbladder inflammation (cholecystitis), pancreatitis, or diverticulitis.

  • Stones: Gallstones, kidney stones, and bladder stones.
  • Cysts: Liver cysts, kidney cysts, and spleen cysts.
  • Tumors: Liver cancer, pancreatic cancer, kidney cancer, and others.

  • Organ Enlargement: Conditions like spleen enlargement (splenomegaly).
  • Fluid Accumulation: Identifying ascites in the abdominal cavity.

When is Abdominal Ultrasound Recommended?

This procedure is often performed to evaluate unexplained abdominal pain, suspected diseases of the liver, gallbladder, pancreas, kidneys, or spleen, or as part of routine health screenings. Additionally, it is a valuable tool for follow-up care and monitoring in patients with known conditions.
