Cardiac Ultrasound (Echocardiography) in Vienna at our Group-Practice

A cardiac ultrasound provides information about the condition and potential issues of the heart. It can be used to diagnose various diseases and disorders and is part of many medical examinations. In our practice, you can undergo this examination, which is also mandatory before certain cancer treatments.

What is a cardiac ultrasound?

Echocardiography uses ultrasound imaging to provide a detailed view of the heart. The heart’s muscle function and valves can be observed directly on a monitor. Functional disorders and valve defects can be diagnosed, and the severity can be assessed.

Additionally, echocardiography allows for an evaluation of pulmonary pressure. During transthoracic echocardiography, the ultrasound probe is placed on the chest wall while the patient lies on an examination table. The probe is directed toward different parts of the heart to produce detailed images displayed on a monitor.

Examination Process

The cardiac ultrasound is a non-invasive method to examine the heart and major blood vessels from various angles on the chest. It assesses the size and function of the heart chambers and valves. Heart murmurs can also be investigated during the examination.

The patient’s upper body is uncovered, and a position is taken that facilitates unhindered examination of the heart. Gel is applied to the chest to aid the probe’s movement and improve imaging clarity.

Duration of Echocardiography

The examination typically lasts about 10 to 20 minutes.

What can be diagnosed with a cardiac ultrasound?

Cardiac ultrasound is particularly helpful for diagnosing unclear heart symptoms and conditions such as congenital defects, valve disorders, “holes” in the heart, or muscle diseases. Follow-up checks are often recommended after heart surgery, chemotherapy, or for arterial hypertension.

Cardiac Ultrasound in Cancer Treatment

This examination is essential before, during, and after cancer treatment (e.g., chemotherapy) to assess the heart’s pumping function. Certain chemotherapy drugs can affect the heart, a condition known as cardiotoxicity. To ensure the body can handle cancer treatment, cardiac ultrasound is used to monitor heart function before, during, and after treatment.

Appointments for cardiac ultrasounds in connection with cancer treatments can be arranged quickly in our practice.
