Hemorrhoid Rubber Band Ligation in Vienna at our Group-Practice

Purpose and Benefits

Rubber band ligation is the most commonly used and effective treatment method for first- and second-degree hemorrhoids. It carries fewer risks and a lower recurrence rate compared to alternatives such as infrared coagulation or hemorrhoid sclerotherapy. Third- and fourth-degree hemorrhoids are typically better treated surgically.

Preparation for the Procedure

The process begins with a consultation and examination to determine the appropriate treatment options. If rubber band ligation is selected, the rectum must be emptied before the procedure using an enema at home. Alternatively, the enema can be administered at our practice. Extensive bowel preparation is not required for hemorrhoid treatment. Rubber band ligation can also be performed immediately following a colonoscopy without additional preparation.

Procedure

The hemorrhoid, along with the surrounding mucosa, is suctioned into a small device under visual guidance. A tiny rubber band is then placed at the base of the suctioned tissue, creating a flat ulcer above the hemorrhoidal tissue after ligation. The resulting scar tissue helps fix the mucosa in place.

The procedure takes about 10 minutes, is painless, and does not require anesthesia. To minimize complications like infection or bleeding, no more than two rubber bands are applied per session. The procedure can be repeated if necessary.

Post-Procedure Care

The rubber band falls off naturally after about 5 to 8 days. The small wound heals within 10 to 14 days, during which a soft stool consistency should be maintained.
